One of the markets we are active in is Industry and Buildings. Here, we actively contribute to reshaping the industry, ensuring it continues to bring health, prosperity, food and goods to society while using and re-using resources with minimal environmental impact. In addition, we develop flexible and sustainable buildings that can effectively meet present and future needs.

As part of Haskoning, the Supply Chain & Logistics team (former Districon) provides specialized knowledge in the field of Supply Chain & Logistics. We believe that applying the right technology enables our customers to improve their supply chain processes and planning. With over 85 highly educated consultants and 4 offices across the globe we support customers in a variety of sectors.

One of the focus areas of the SC&L team is network design. Through advanced analytics and in-depth knowledge of business we seek to develop the best distribution networks for our clients.

    Project Description

With rising costs, increasing service requirements and the introduction of zero emission zones, many retailers actively seek to optimize their distribution networks. One of the major challenges is workload distribution: stores and customers have preferred delivery time windows that do not typically allow for the best use of vehicles and drivers.

Through this project, we aim to design and test dynamic pricing in a retail environment. By shifting stores or leveraging discounts on deliveries, we seek to achieve a system-optimal delivery schedule rather than a solution that satisfies the requirements of each individual store at increased costs. The model should incorporate franchise autonomy and fairness.

Some financial incentives include (but are not limited to): peak surcharges, discounted deliveries for off-peak timeslots, differentiation of service-level tiers, reduced costs allocation if wider time windows are applied.

    Goal of the Project

    1. Quantify maximum potential of dynamic pricing for retail distribution networks

    2. Highlight sensitivity of the model by running different parameters for various retail branches

    3. Define future research directions

    4. Outline roadmap for potential implementation

    Deliverables

    1. Mathematical model that delivers insight in the optimality gap of the desired vs. actual schedule

    2. Decision model that provides guidance in pricing discussions with customers

    3. Report summarizing key findings and recommendations for academics and business

    Essential student knowledge

    • Thorough supply chain & logistics understanding

    • Mathematical modelling (MILP, Data Science, Game Theory or simulation)

    • Decision making in Transport & Logistics
