SYNERCIZE

SYNERCIZE is a large research project funded by DINALOG targeting modal shift towards inland waterways in the construction industry, thereby reducing CO2 and NOx emissions.

    Within SYNERCIZE, the Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam, and the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht collaborate with construction companies, logistics service providers and governmental bodies (who act both as waterway authorities and as frequent owners of construction projects).

    Currently, inland waterway transportation for construction is often financially not competitive and the uptake is further hindered by the lack of visibility of this transport mode, even if it was competitive for a given project. The unpredictable nature of construction projects makes it challenging to set up construction logistics on waterways for projects individually. To ultimately develop business models for construction logistics on waterways, we envision a flexible backbone system which can be easily integrated into construction projects, thereby reducing individual planning efforts and reducing costs. We first develop digital tools for gathering the necessary data and then develop algorithms for network design and logistics operations utilizing this data, as well as developing new business model for this modal shift to work.

    To test research outcomes in practice, SYNERCIZE builds on to the Blue Lane Living Lab managed by Metropolitan Hub System, connecting provinces and municipalities, operators of electric pushers, logistics service providers, and freight owners.
