SSCF: Case study Dow Chemicals

Monday, November 25, 2013 - 18:00

At Monday November 25, 2013, the Student Supply Chain Forum and the Industria Master Study Club organized a case study evening with Dow Chemicals. Three alumni of the OML MSc program, Ozcan Kaymaz, Otman Amohammadi, and Xiao Lin, all working at Dow came over to present the students a case with the theme tank sizing. In teams with mixed compositions, 20 MSc and LMS students dived into this problem.

The evening was split into two parts. In the first round, the teams familiarized themselves with the particularities of the problem. A stylized model was considered to study the problem of deciding on a replenishment size and the capacity of a tank for holding inventory to serve demand from a certain geographic region, which would be operated by a third party logistics provider. The objective was to minimize costs, while satisfying a service level requirement. After a delightful dinner, the second round started and the competition was on. The teams were challenged to think about relaxing assumptions to incorporate more realistic aspects in the model, while still being able to analyze the models and to extract useful insights. To guide the students in identifying key issues in the real-life setting, the Dow professionals were available to share their knowledge. It was also nice to see that some students could use their experience with Dow in a graduation or designer project to their benefit.

At the end of the evening, the teams presented their proposals in which a wide variety of suggestions passed. The winning team that impressed the Dow jury the most was awarded a liquid prize. After some final reflections on the case study, this successful evening came to an end with a social drink in the Villa.
